With a toolbox full of props, and some ingeniously interconnected circus feats, Brent McCoy constructs a wild physical comedy laugh factory! Using astonishing physical dexterity, Brent transforms items like a foam wrench, a rubber plunger and a traffic cone into pure fun. Intelligent, precise and absolutely hilarious, Brent’s antics have been described as “Cirque de Soleil meets Home Depot!” Home improvement was never this wacky!

Part of Canal Park Playhouse’s Matinee/Brunch series, brunch at the theater’s Waffle Iron Café is available before and after the show.

Growing up on a dairy farm in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, Brent McCoy developed an interest in juggling and circus as a teenager. After teaching for Circus Smirkus, he continued to hone his skills while attending Bates College. Upon graduating with a painting degree, he quickly discovered that performing was his passion. Brent has worked with Avner the Eccentric, Keith Johnstone, Fritz Grobe, and Robert Post. He has performed at festivals world wide, from China to Canada, and for private corporate events. In addition to touring his solo show, he currently performs The Secret Circus with his wife Maya, produces semi-annual shows with Vermont Vaudeville and teaches school residencies with YES! Theater

Stunt Lab’s Mark Hayward embraces second chances in his new solo show TAKE TWO: BAD GIGS GONE GOOD

Canal Park Playhouse is thrilled to present the world premiere of TAKE TWO: BAD GIGS GONE GOOD, created and performed by Mark Hayward. TAKE TWO: BAD GIGS GONE GOOD begins performances on Saturday, October 6 for a limited engagement through Sunday, October 29. Performances take place at Canal Park Playhouse (508 Canal Street, between Greenwich and West Streets in Tribeca). The performance schedule is Saturdays and Sundays at 1 PM & 4 PM. The regular ticket price is $20. For tickets or more information, call OvationTix on 1-866-811-4111 or visit www.canalparkplayhouse.com.

Have you ever smashed yourself in the face with a yo-yo in front of 800 of your peers? Thrown flaming torches into a crowd? Embarrassed yourself on national television? Stunt Lab's yo-yo champion Mark Hayward has done all of these things (and more). Now he goes solo, hilariously recreating some of his worst gigs for your entertainment. But this time he fixes the disasters. Maybe.

Part of Canal Park Playhouse’s Matinee/Brunch series, brunch at the theater’s Waffle Iron Café is available before and after the show. The brunch menu includes hot-off-the-waffle-iron spinach, mushroom, and smoked chicken sausage frittatas; French toast; and Traditional Belgian Waffles with pure Vermont maple syrup and butter, as well as the house specialty The Playhouse Pink Waffle (a pink waffle with strawberries and whipped cream) and the chocoholic fantasy the Decadent Dark Chocolate Waffle.  Entree salads and waffle-branded sliders are also available.

Mark Hayward (creator/performer) has been a variety arts performer since 1990. He is a World Yo-yo Champion, a member of a World Champion Juggling Team, and a Spintop Champion. His mom is proud. Mark has traveled the world with a yo-yo on his finger (well, mostly in his pocket), and has made appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, America's Got Talent, and the NBC Nightly News (without committing a crime). Someday Mark hopes to perform for both the President and the Queen. Not being a convicted criminal should help with that.

Someone Who'll Watch Over Me at the Canal Park Playhouse

Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, now at the Canal Park Playhouse, is an intense study of three men kidnapped in Beirut in the early 1990s.  It is a tense and tight play set in a single cell, the kidnappers never seen, but always oppressively felt by the characters.  The men in question are the American Alex, the Irishman Edward and an Englishman Micheal.
.
Twenty years is a long time in terrorism.  Twenty years ago, when Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me was written and first produced, Beirut was infamous for kidnapping of foreigners.  The motivation of the kidnappers was always a question in the audiences’ mind; why does this happen, what do they want?  But as the world has moved onto bigger and more horrifying terrorism, Someone Who’ll Watch over Me actually becomes a more universal play, exploring man’s common reactions to a helpless plight.
.
The three men have to learn to trust and depend on each other, despite their personal differences and national backgrounds.  The mens’ wild imaginations and perilous conditions blur the boundaries between purposeful humor and manic response.  The wildly emotional Edward, played by Timothy Riley, plays with the Irish reputation for drink and madness.  His outrageous comments are used to mask his fear.  Mr. Riley does an excellent job of showcasing Edward’s bravado and his insecurities.
.
The stoic American Alex is played by director Justin Lauro, who stepped into the role late due to cast issues.  Mr. Lauro is an accomplished actor, and does a great job with Alex - riding an American’s grit and determination right up to the cliff edge.  But it is Alex Teachey, as the British Michael, who carries the audience’s emotional center.  Like the audience, Michael is introduced as Alex and Edward who have already developed a relationship based on survival.  Michael has to learn how to adapt not only to his captors, but also to the odd dynamic that Alex and Edward have.  Michael is a stereotypical British man, reserved and rational to the point of annoyance.   Mr. Teachey pulls this attitude off, while showing it as a coping mechanism.

.
Someone ... is paired with Sarazad and the Monster-King, a retelling of 1001 Arabian Nights for a younger audience.  Both of these plays make use of story-telling.  In Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, the men tell each other tales from the past, often acting them out in order to keep their sanity and strengthen their bonds.  The tales they spin give voice to their hopes and dreams. It is very well done.
.
The simple staging (lighting by Daniel Dungan) is effective in the intimate room.  Justin Lauro has directed the show with a nice feel for how much the audience can take before becoming numb to the situation.  Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me has grown in impact since its introduction 20 years ago.  The emotion of helplessness in the face of unfocussed anger has spread much across the population, no longer confined to small cells in Beirut.
